Job Title: Technical Writer

Reporting to: Director, Marketing & Sales Programs
Location: 123 Commerce Valley Drive East, Markham, Ontario

Position Summary:

As a member of the technical documentation department, the successful candidate will develop enterprise software materials such as user guides, installation manuals, glossaries, etc. He or she will work closely with cross-functional project teams to deliver high-quality documentation. Additional responsibilities include participating in initiatives to improve information usability and delivery.

Responsibilities include:

  • Developing or updating documentation to support company products, such as end user guides, installation manuals and troubleshooting guides, etc.
  • Assessing complex user requirements and recommending format and structure which meets user needs and adheres to company specifications.
  • Reviews, analyzes and interprets technical data.
  • Independently plan, develop/coordinate, and design concise and easily understood written materials.
  • Analyses documentation requirements to determine the impact and relationships with existing documentation.
  • Revises and updates existing documentation and ensures accuracy, clarity and completeness of all documents.
  • Determines illustration requirements, layout of tables and charts, and produces online content.
  • Prioritizes work to meet timelines and business needs of the team according to timelines provided by Product Management.
  • Builds and maintains effective relationships with clients such as product management, professional services, R&D, IT and marketing.
  • Participates with management to regularly review processes to ensure changing needs of the business are met
  • Proactively identify updates to internal processes such as review/approval, job aids, etc.

Experience required:

  • B.A. in Applied Arts or English, Business / Technical Writing certificate, or equivalent work experience is required.
  • 5+ years experience in the field of technical communication.
  • Experience writing documentation for enterprise software products.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly grasp technical concepts.
  • Strong knowledge of technical writing techniques and tools.
  • Excellent planning, research, and writing skills.
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to contribute ideas to improve technical documentation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Adobe FrameMaker, Acrobat and Distiller as well as Microsoft Office.
  • Superior organizational and time management skills with a strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
